The 57th Battalion was created in Military District 6 (Wehrkreis VI) on October 12, 1937, and became a unit of the 1st Light Brigade. The garrison city of the battalion is Hoeckster. The staff of the battalion was recruited from the personnel of the 5th combat engineer battalion, 5th infantry division, and 43rd combat engineer battalion.
