DAK Sonderverband/ Special Unit 288  patch and picture of the soldier served in this unit. We got it from the veteran's family, Most probably it was removed from one of his tunic or overcoat by him or his relatives after the war as a war memorable. Nice set.

History

Sonderverband/ Special Unit 288- formed in Potsdam, Germany on 01.07.1941. The unit has been completed from other German units located in Reich and German personnel who had lived or had served in South-West Asia. The unit was created for a special purpose and as such was not organized along the line of a regular German brigade. In total the Sonderverband consisted of 7 to 12 companies with each company having a specialized service. Part of the unit were highly specialized personnel. Among these were a company conscripted of linguists who were fluent in Arabic and Persians dialects, as Urdi, Hindi, Sanskrit. Most of the people in this company had spent time in the areas - Syria, Iraq, India, Afganistan- where the unit was to be deployed. Other non-combat companies included a print shop, a water testing unit, and Brandenburg Kompanie. The Brandenburg company were to infiltrate enemy lines dressed as the enemy and commit acts of sabotage, gather information etc. The other companies were more standardized units.

Sanitäts Company

The entire unit was motorized (mot) The reconnaissance company equipped with armored cars ( Panzerspähwagen)
