Field jacket of an Oberleutnant from the 100th Mountain Infantry Regiment of the Wehrmacht
The jacket is made of lightweight cotton fabric and was repurposed from a uniform of the German Colonial Corps in Africa during World War I. On the right sleeve, there is an edelweiss emblem of the mountain troops, which has partially lost its stitching, revealing the original, unfaded fabric beneath. The jacket itself has significantly faded under the scorching Greek sun in 1941.
The jacket features the ribbon of the Iron Cross 2nd Class, and on the left side of the chest, there are loops for attaching two awards, presumably the General Assault Badge and a sports badge. The absence of the Eastern Front Medal ribbon suggests that the owner likely participated in the Greek campaign of 1941.
The 100th Mountain Infantry Regiment was part of the 5th Mountain Division of the Wehrmacht and took part in the Balkan campaign, including the invasion of Greece. After the Balkan operations, the division was transferred to the Eastern Front. Most likely, the characteristics of this jacket confirm its use in these combat operations.
The jacket is in fairly good condition despite extensive use. It would make an excellent display piece for exhibition on a mannequin. The approximate size is EU 48, equivalent to 38R (UK) / 38 (US).
