k.u.k. 3rd Army Carpathian Defence Cap Badge 1914–1915 – Swoboda & Gurschner Vienna

Product Code: c/vz48
Price: 65.00€

Description

Original k.u.k. cap badge commemorating the Carpathian Defence of the Austro-Hungarian 3rd Army during the 1914–1915 campaign. The badge was designed by the renowned Viennese artists and medallists Friedrich Swoboda and Gustav Gurschner, whose signatures appear on the piece. Badges of this type were privately purchased by soldiers and worn on field caps and service headgear of the Imperial and Royal (k.u.k.) Army.

The upper section bears the inscription KARPATEN, the centre features the motto Durchhalten! ("Hold Fast!"), and the lower part reads 3. Armee 1914/1915. The design depicts k.u.k. soldiers defending fortified positions in the Carpathian Mountains against the Russian bear, the traditional symbol of the Russian Empire.

Initially commanded by General of Cavalry Rudolf Ritter von Brudermann and later by General Svetozar Boroević von Bojna, the Austro-Hungarian 3rd Army fought in the Battle of Galicia and defended the strategic mountain passes of the Carpathians. In January 1915, together with the German South Army, it spearheaded the unsuccessful offensive to relieve the besieged fortress of Przemyśl. By February 1915, the army had suffered approximately 88,000 casualties, around 75% of its original strength, resulting in its temporary disbandment in June 1915.

Struck in bronze, the badge retains sharp detail and an attractive natural age patina developed over more than a century. Good collector condition.
