Description

WWII Soviet SSh-40 Steel Combat Helmet with White Winter Camouflage (6-Rivet Type), 1943.

Original Soviet SSh-40 steel helmet, standard issue of the Red Army during World War II.

The helmet retains its original factory-applied olive green paint, over which a field-applied white winter camouflage has been added. The whitewash is worn and chipped, revealing the original paint beneath and giving the helmet a classic, authentic frontline appearance.

The helmet also shows some traces of black paint. Check attached photos.  It is possible that it was once repainted black, a color sometimes associated by collectors with Soviet naval infantry or naval use during the war. The steel helmet was found in the early 1990s on the territory of a naval base in Paldiski, Estonia. After that, it remained for many years in a private collection and has now been put up for sale by the collector’s heirs.

The steel shell remains in solid condition, showing typical signs of wartime use such as scratches, paint loss, and surface wear, but no major dents or structural damage.

The interior features its original liner with three pads, secured to the shell with six rivets. The leather shows noticeable wear, age-related cracking, and some losses, but is still present and intact. The original cloth chinstrap is also still attached.

Factory stamps are visible inside the shell and on the liner, along with a production marking dated 1943, confirming wartime manufacture. The helmet was produced at the Lysva factory.

A genuine and attractive example of a WWII Soviet combat helmet with original winter camouflage, highly desirable for collectors of Red Army militaria,  preserved in untouched condition.
