Original Marinekorps Flandern Cross, instituted on 13 September 1921 by Admiral Ludwig August von Schröder, the former commander of the German Marine Corps Flanders. The decoration was awarded exclusively to veterans of the Marine Corps who had served during the First World War. Approximately 30,000 examples were produced. In addition to the full-size cross, miniature versions, lapel badges, and campaign clasps for individual battles were also available. The decoration had to be purchased by the recipient and was issued together with an award document. Veterans with criminal convictions were not eligible. Following the political changes of 1933, official wear of the cross was prohibited, although many former members continued wearing it alongside their First World War decorations.
The bronze cross features crossed swords between the arms, with a crowned anchor surrounded by a laurel wreath in the centre. The arms bear the motto Zur See – Unbesiegt – Im Felde ("Undefeated at Sea and in the Field"). The reverse displays the Imperial German naval flag, a Flemish lion, a laurel wreath and the inscription Marine Korps 1914–1918. The decoration is mounted on its original Imperial German colours ribbon.
The Marine Corps Flanders was formed in late 1914 from two naval infantry divisions stationed in occupied Flanders under the command of Admiral von Schröder. It became one of the most effective formations of the Imperial German Navy, comprising naval infantry, coastal artillery, destroyers, torpedo boats, submarines and naval aviation. The corps fought in many of the major engagements on the Western Front, including the Yser, Ypres, Somme and Flanders campaigns, for which special campaign clasps were later authorised. The corps was disbanded in 1919.
The cross remains in good collector condition. The original ribbon shows honest age and period wear.
