Original Deutsches Kreuz in Gold manufactured by Steinhauer & Lück, Lüdenscheid, maker marked PKZ-4 on the pin. This is the desirable heavy construction variant, produced to an exceptionally high standard. The badge remains in Mint condition and shows no signs of wear. The deep black finish of the central star plate is perfectly preserved, together with the rich gilt finish of the laurel wreath bearing the date 1941. The original white frosted silver finish completely covers the radiating star, the field beneath the central plate, and the reverse of the badge. The red enamel centre beneath the wreath retains its vivid carrot-red colour in flawless condition, free from chips, cracks, or scratches. The black enamel swastika is likewise free of scratches and retains its original factory gloss.
The German Cross in Gold was instituted on 28 September 1941 and became one of the Third Reich's highest combat decorations, ranking between the Iron Cross 1st Class and the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. Among frontline soldiers it was often referred to as the "nine-times Iron Cross 2nd Class", as the level of combat merit normally required for the award was considered roughly equivalent to nine awards of the Iron Cross 2nd Class for repeated acts of personal bravery.
This example is an outstanding specimen of Steinhauer & Lück production, displaying exceptional manufacturing quality, superb preservation of all original finishes, and flawless enamels.
