After thorough deliberation, we, the bishops of Austria, recognize this great historical moment and share it with the Austrian people. We are convinced that today marks the fulfillment of our nation's thousand-year dream—the reunification with the great German Reich. We consider it our duty to address the faithful with this appeal.
We do so with full conviction, as the Führer's Commissioner for the Referendum in Austria, Gauleiter Bürckel, has clearly outlined a political course that aligns with the principle: "Render unto God what is God's, and unto the Kaiser what is the Kaiser's."

Solemn Declaration
Out of deepest conviction and free will, we, the undersigned bishops of the Austrian church provinces, make this statement on the occasion of this great historical event—the reunification of Austria with Germany.
We joyfully acknowledge that the National Socialist movement has fulfilled its mission by uniting the people and implementing a social policy for the German nation, particularly for the most impoverished. We are confident that this policy will continue and bear fruit.
The episcopate accompanies this path with confidence in the future, blesses its endeavors, and calls upon the faithful to support it.
On the day of the referendum, it is self-evident for us, as bishops, to call upon the people to support this new path, and we trust that the faithful will receive it with understanding, recognizing their duty to their nation.

You see that we bishops voluntarily and without compulsion have fulfilled our national duty. I know that this statement will be followed by a good cooperation.
Declaration of Austrian Bishops in Saxony for the referendum. After detailed discussions, we Bishops of Austria have resolutely, following the great historical hours that Austria's people experienced, and the awareness that our people's millennial yearning for unification in a great empire of the Germans finds their fulfillment in our day to judge all our believers. We can do this all the more and more anxiously, when the leader of the plebiscite in Austria Gauleiter Biirckel, the sincere line announced his policy under the motto: “God, what is God's and the Emperor, what is the Emperors "Vienna 21 March 1938
Solemn statement!
Out of deepest conviction and with free will, we declare signed bishops of the Austrian Church Province on the occasion of the great historical events in German Austria: we gladly acknowledge that the National Socialist Movement in the field of national and economic development and social policy for the German Reich and the people, and especially for the poorest classes of the people, has done and is doing a great job. We are also convinced that the work of the National Socialist movement averted the danger of all-destructive godless Bolshevism. The bishops accompany this work for the future with their best blessings and will also exhort the faithful in this sense. On the day of the plebiscite, it is a natural national duty for us bishops, and as Germans to confess the German Reich, and we also expect all believing Christians to know what they owe their people.

With joy and sincere satisfaction, the whole German people takes note of the unanimous opinion of the bishops of Austria. The explanation is apt to put an end to the past. It proves that in this time, so eventful for the German people and their future, the Catholic Church also wants to find the way to the new state. National Socialism, which pursues the unshakeable goal of unifying all Germans, will be happy to be able to put an end to the strife and thus the disruption of our people in this area as well.
Thus, for the first time in our history on the 10th of April 1938, the entire German national community shall enter the ballot box without reservation of tribes, countries, classes and denominations and unreservedly pronounce its YES!

Die Bischöfe Österreichs schreiben für die Wahl an Gauleiter Bürckel Wien am 8. März 1938 sehr geehrter Herr Gauleiter Beigeschlossene Erklärung der Bischöfe übersende ich hiermit. Sie ersehen daraus,daß wir Bischöfe freiwillig und ohne Zwang unsere nationale Pflicht erfüllt haben. Ich weiß daß diese Erklärung eine gute Zusammenarbeit folgend wird. Mit dem Ausdruck ausgezeichneter Koch Hochachtung- Vorwort und Erklärung Seite 2 und 3. Vorwort zur feierlichen Erklärung der österreichischen Bischöfe in Sachsen der Volksabstimmung. Nach eingehenden Beratungen haben wir Bischöfe von Österreich angesichts der großen geschichtlichen Stunden, die Österreichs Volk erlebt, und den Bewußtsein, daß in unseren Tagen die tausendjährige Sehnsucht unseres Volkes nach Einigung in einem großen Reich der Deutschen ihre Erfüllung findet, uns entschlossen, nachfolgenden Aufruf an alle unsere Gläubigen zu richten. Wir können das umso und besorgter tun, als uns der Beauftragte des Führers für die Volksabstimmung in Österreich Gauleiter Bürckel, die aufrichtige Linie seine Politik bekanntgab, die unter dem Motto stehen soll: Gebet Gott, was Gottes ist und dem Kaiser, was des Kaisers ist" Wien am 21 März 1938
Feierliche Erklärung!
Aus innerster Überzeugung und mit freiem Willen erklären wir unterzeichneten Bischöfe der österreichischen Kirchenprovinz anlässlich der großen geschichtlichen Geschehnisse in Deutsch-Österreich: wir erkennen freudig an, daß die nationalsozialistische Bewegung auf dem Gebiet des völkischen und wirtschaftlichen Aufbaues sowie der Sozial-Politik für das Deutsche Reich und Volk und namentlich für die ärmsten Schichten des Volks hervorragendes geleistet hat und leistet. Wir sind auch der Überzeugung daß durch das Wirken der nationalsozialistischen Bewegung die Gefahr des alles zerstörenden gottlosen Bolschewismus abgewehrt wurde. Die Bischofу begleiten dieses Wirken für die Zukunft mit ihrem besten Segenswünschen und werden auch die Gläubigen in diesem Sinne ermahnen. Am Tage der Volksabstimmung ist es für uns Bischöfe selbstverständliche nationale Pflicht, und als Deutsche zum Deutschen Reich zu bekennen, und wir erwarten auch von allen gläubigen Christen, daß sie wissen, was sie ihrem Volke schuldig sind. Mit Freude und aufrichtiger Genugtuung nimmt das ganze deutsche Volk von der einheitlichen Stellungnahme der Bischöfe Österreich zur Wahl Kenntnis. Der Erklärung ist geeignet, einen Schlußstrich unter die Vergangenheit zu ziehen. Sie beweist, daß in dieser, für das deutsche Volk und seine Zukunft so ereignisreichen Zeit auch die katholische Kirche den Weg zum neuen Staate finden will. Der Nationalsozialismus, der das unverrückbare Ziel der Einigung aller Deutschen verfolgt, wird glücklich sein, auch auf diesem Gebiet den Hader und damit die Zerrissenheit unseres Volkes beenden zu können.
So soll zum ersten Male in unserer Geschichte am 10. April 1938 die ganze deutsche Volksgemeinschaft ohne Rücksicht auf Stämme, Länder, Klassen und Konfessionen geschlossen zur Wahlurne treten und vorbehaltlos ihr JA aussprechen!
