Excerpt from the camp regulations of the SS and police penal labor camp Danzig-Matzkau:

  1. Letters are subject to censorship.
  2. Each prisoner is allowed to write only one letter every 6 weeks and receive one letter within the same period.
  3. Letters must be written on a single sheet of paper, format 14.5 × 21 cm, with four pages and no more than 15 lines per page.
  4. The sending of parcels and their delivery through the camp administration is prohibited. Any received parcels will be returned to the sender.
  5. Money transfers are permitted once a month, with a maximum amount of 5 Reichsmarks.
  6. Prisoners are not allowed to receive any additional food beyond their regular camp rations.
  7. Smoking, as well as the possession of matches and smoking supplies, is prohibited and will be punished.

My dear mother!
I am doing well, and I hope everything is fine at home too. I miss you very much and often think of you. I hope that I can see you again soon. Everything here goes its usual way. We received... (the rest of the text is unclear)

I am grateful to you for your care and your letters; they support me and give me strength. Please, do not worry about me. I am trying to stay strong and hope that the war will end soon.

Recently, I had my tenth working day, and I feel satisfied. We work together with other comrades. I have already become accustomed to the routine here.

Mother, please send my regards to all our relatives. I am eagerly waiting for your next letter. Please, write to me about father and how our neighbors are doing.
