SS-Freiwilligen Bataillon Nordost sleeve shield

Branch: WAFFEN SS
Product Code: o456/1
Price: On hold

Description

Sleeve shield of the Finnish volunteers of the SS battalion "North-East" (SS-Freiwilligen Bataillon Nordost)
First-type shield, made in Finland. Hand-embroidered with gold bullion thread on rep fabric, depicting the Finnish heraldic lion holding a sword in an armored paw, with white floral ornaments on the field. The first two types of these shields were produced in Finland. The second type repeated the design of the first but was made on black fabric and differed from the German-made version in manufacturing style.

The third type, machine-embroidered, was produced in Eibenstock (Germany), a small town known for manufacturing most of the Third Reich's insignia. The shield shows minor losses typical of items with field use.

Considering that only 1,407 men served in the battalion, which was disbanded in the spring of 1943, and that many soldiers wore shields of all three types, this piece is a rarity and a truly unique collectible. This shield came from a Finnish collection and was received directly from a veteran of the unit.
