Description

Waffen-SS Cap Eagle, M1/72 (SS-Schirmmützenadler)

Waffen-SS cap eagle with dual markings M1/72 and SS 499/42, corresponding to the manufacturer Fritz Zimmermann, Stuttgart.

Produced in 1942. The eagle's base is made of aluminum and coated with a copper foil using the CupAl process, which was commonly applied to early examples. This coating provided optimal adhesion for subsequent silver plating. However, in this case, no silvering was applied. Instead, the front side was coated with a special aluminum compound using a vacuum deposition method, similar to the technology used in mirror production.

This method of coating was both cheaper and technologically simpler for mass production, reducing costs not only for cap eagles but also for all uniform insignia and fittings. Additionally, this type of finish was less reflective, making it more practical for use in field conditions.

The reverse side of the eagle has a characteristic copper tint without additional coating, which is typical for this type.

This version is extremely rare, and finding one in mint condition is nearly impossible.
