Westwall Medal for Work in the Defence of Germany
Westwall Medaille für Arbeit zum Schutze Deutschlands, known as the West Wall Medal. Early first type, produced in bronze. The medal remains in mint condition.
One side bears the inscription “Für Arbeit zum Schutze Deutschlands”. The opposite side shows an eagle, sword and shovel above a Westwall bunker. The medal was awarded for participation in the construction and support of defensive fortifications along Germany’s western border, as well as service connected with the defence of the western front.
In meaning, this award is often viewed as a western counterpart to the Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42 medal, which was awarded for service during the winter campaign on the Eastern Front. This medal is connected with the western theatre and the Westwall defensive system.
