Document 3 – Bericht (Operational Report, Carpathians, Western Ukraine)
Detailed report describing an attack by an armed group referred to as bandits on a rural homestead in the Ossiany (Ossiany) area, resulting in the death of SS-Rottenführer Fritz Bruckner

…armed individuals moved south on foot. When they encountered the cook and the drivers, they pointed their weapons at them in order to drive them away from the farm.

On the route from Ossiany (Ossiany) to a neighboring homestead, a farmhand accompanying the cook noticed additional armed men concealed in bushes.

In the evening, the bandits opened machine gun fire on a nearby farm (according to a farmer’s testimony).

SS-Sturmführer Linke, approximately 20 minutes after departing, discovered the house on fire and attempted to return, however the bandits noticed him in time and, taking cover in World War I-era field positions near the house, prevented him from approaching.

Linke observed the bandits in the Ossiany (Ossiany) area throughout the day and at approximately 17:00 proceeded to a neighboring farm, where he learned from the cook of the killing of SS-Rottenführer Bruckner.

He then moved at dusk to Jawornik (Jawornik) and reported the attack to police in Żabie (Zhabie), Burkut (Burkut), Kosów (Kosiv), and to the SS base Rusow (Rusow), however assistance arrived too late.

On the morning of 28.08.1943, a unit from Kolomea (Kolomyia) arrived under the command of an Obersturmführer and confirmed that the house had completely burned down and that SS-Rottenführer Bruckner had been killed and burned.

The livestock remained in place. Based on a recovered fuel can, it was determined that Bruckner had been doused with gasoline and set on fire after being shot.

The bandits had concealed themselves near the Hutsul homestead the evening before and observed the area.

Farm workers attempted to extinguish the fire but were driven off.
