The squad rushed into the attack. But at the trench of the enemy, the squad leader was wounded. The soldiers lay down. The commander shouted:
— Corporal Nasonov, take command of the squad!
A sharp “Forward!” rang out. The soldiers rose to their full height. Corporal Nasonov personally killed three fascists and led the squad in the attack. When the first machine gunner was struck down by the Germans, Nasonov immediately took over the machine gun and poured lead on the enemy. In hand-to-hand combat he personally killed two fascists and captured a non-commissioned officer. The squad successfully completed the combat mission.
… Corporal Naumov. On the anti-tank position only one anti-tank rifle crew remained. Suddenly an enemy tank moved directly at them. The crew commander was killed. Corporal Naumov commanded: “Ready to fire!” — and with a precise shot set the tank ablaze. The enemy retreated.
… Our units were conducting offensive battle. The wounded platoon commander was sent to the rear. “Corporal Fokin is appointed platoon commander!” declared the battalion commissar. Fokin raised the platoon and led it into the attack. A fierce hand-to-hand fight began. Brave Corporal Fokin personally killed seven fascists. The unit completed its mission.
Great is the courage of the Red Army soldiers, but the heroism of corporals — squad leaders — is unparalleled.
The courage of Guards Officer Kosolapov
(By phone from our correspondent)
On one sector of the front the enemy sent heavy self-propelled guns “Ferdinand” into battle. They moved toward the Soviet positions, ignoring artillery fire. But in their path stood our heavy tank under the command of Senior Lieutenant Kosolapov.
Closing in on the enemy, Kosolapov opened fire and knocked out one machine. The second, turning, tried to escape. But an accurate shot stopped it. Two “Ferdinands” burned on the battlefield.
Five Red Army men repelled a German counterattack.
… Soldier Mazinov noticed a group of fascists trying to bypass our positions. Stealthily approaching, he opened fire with his submachine gun. The enemy was stunned. Red Army men supported Mazinov, and the enemy fell back. The bold maneuver saved the detachment from encirclement.
During the summer battles from July 5 to August 20 our troops on all sectors of the Soviet-German front destroyed: 4,600 enemy aircraft, 6,400 tanks, 3,800 guns, 9,600 vehicles.
Enemy losses in dead amount to more than 300,000 soldiers and officers. Considering that in the German army the number of heavily wounded exceeds the number of dead by no less than two to two and a half times, it can be assumed that total German losses in killed and wounded from July 5 to August 20 are not less than 1 million men.
During the same period our troops captured 25,600 prisoners.
Operational report for August 21
On August 21 our troops on the Kharkov direction, overcoming enemy resistance and counterattacks, continued offensive battles and captured several populated areas.
On the Bryansk direction, in the area southwest of Spas-Demensk, our troops fought battles to improve their positions.
In the Donbass, southwest of Voroshilovgrad, our troops waged successful local battles.
… In total for the day, 129 German tanks were destroyed or knocked out. In air battles and by anti-aircraft artillery fire 86 enemy aircraft were shot down.
MERCILESSLY EXTERMINATE THE ENEMY’S MANPOWER!
Storming pillboxes, artillery fire against tanks, mobile mortars, actions of assault groups — all these are examples of the courage of Soviet soldiers.
