Dragoon Soldier’s Saber Model 1881 with Bayonet, Zlatoust, 1911
Dragoon soldier’s saber, Model 1881, manufactured in 1911 at the Zlatoust Or. Fabr. (Златоустъ Ор. Фабр. — Zlatoust Arms Factory), one of the principal imperial arms producers of the Russian Empire. The blade is made of steel, single-edged, with a gentle curve and a wide fuller that increases durability without sacrificing flexibility. There are no signs of sharpening; only minor darkened areas are present, free from rust or pitting.
The crossguard bears the stamp «Златоустъ Ор. Фабр.» with the year 1910 г.
Near the ricasso is a circular maker’s mark «Златоустъ Ор. Фабр.», dated 1911 г.
On the reverse side of the blade are two inspector marks: a square containing the letter «У», and a rectangular cartouche with «У», surmounted by a crown and followed by the number 45 on the right.
The hilt features a brass pommel and a smoothly curved crossguard with rounded tip. The wooden grip is decorated with diagonal fluted grooves, offering both a secure hold and visual distinction.
The saber is accompanied by a socket bayonet for the Mosin rifle. The bayonet bears the number 38824, stamped over a previously issued number 139070, which was struck out.
The scabbard is made of wood and covered with rubberized fabric designed to absorb impact. Its brass fittings include a throat, three suspension bands with bayonet lugs, and a chape.
A longitudinal crack is present on the inner side of the central section of the scabbard. Despite this, the scabbard remains structurally solid and fully functional — it securely retains the blade and shows no signs of failure.
All components, including the body of the scabbard, are stamped with the inspection mark «У».
