ORDER of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief to Army General Rokossovsky

The troops of the Central Front, continuing their rapid offensive, crossed the river Seym and on September 6 liberated from the German invaders the city of Konotop. Today, on September 9, after two days of heavy fighting, our troops stormed and captured the city of Bakhmach — an important railway junction, a major communications and defensive stronghold of the Germans on the Kiev axis.

In the battles for Konotop and Bakhmach, the troops of General-Lieutenant Chernyakhovsky, General-Lieutenant Bondarev, General-Major Kozlov, General-Lieutenant of Artillery Rudenko distinguished themselves, and especially: the 132nd Rifle Division under General-Major Shkuryin, the 143rd Rifle Division under Colonel Lunin, the 248th Rifle Division under General-Major Golosov, the 70th Guards Division under General-Major Kuznetsov, the 75th Guards Rifle Division under Colonel Roginsky, the 221st Bomber Aviation Division under General-Major Buzylyov, the 8th Guards Fighter Aviation Division under General-Major Zhegalin, the 56th Guards Mortar Regiment under Lieutenant Colonel Shapovalov, and the 85th Guards Mortar Regiment under Lieutenant Colonel Pavlov.

For distinction in the battles for Konotop and Bakhmach, by order of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, the following honorific titles are awarded:

The 143rd Rifle Division — “Konotop Division”
The 248th Rifle Division — “Bakhmach Division”

Henceforth these formations shall be called:
143rd Konotop Rifle Division
248th Bakhmach Rifle Division

In commemoration of this victory, to the units most distinguished in the battles for Konotop and Bakhmach, a salute of 20 artillery salvos from 224 guns shall be fired in Moscow.

The Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR decrees:

  1. To establish the honorary badge “Laureate of the Stalin Prize.”

  2. To approve the attached Regulations on the badge.

  3. To assign the awarding of the badge to the Committee for Stalin Prizes under the Council of People’s Commissars of the USSR.

Operational summary for September 9

On the Nezhin axis, our troops, after heavy fighting, broke the enemy’s resistance and stormed the city of Bakhmach.

In the area west of Stalino (Donbass), our forces continued their successful offensive, advancing 10–15 kilometers and capturing more than 180 settlements, including the district centers of Dobropole and Staro-Beshevo, as well as major towns and villages: Zamozhnoye, Novo-Dmitrovka, Prishib, Petrovka, Novo-Pavlovka, Aleksandrovka, Novo-Berezovka, Sergeyevka, Novo-Podgorodnoye, Muravyovka, Krasnoye, Petrovsky, Andreyevka, Bolshaya Kamyshevaha, Staraya Ingateyevka, Staraya Nikolayevka, and others.

On the Priluki axis, our troops advanced successfully and took more than 30 settlements, including Smeloye, Nedrigaylov, and Sinevka.

North of Bryansk, our troops captured the town of Lyudinovo.

Southwest of Kharkov, fighting continued with our troops on the offensive.

On the Smolensk axis, our troops advanced 6–12 kilometers, capturing more than 100 settlements, including the district centers of Dukhovshchina and Porechye, as well as the towns of Yartsevo and Yelnya.

In these battles our forces captured many trophies and prisoners.

In total, on September 9, on all fronts our forces liberated more than 400 settlements. In air battles and on airfields, 77 German aircraft were destroyed. Our losses — 19 aircraft.


The Capitulation of Italy

On September 8, 1943, Marshal Badoglio’s government officially announced the capitulation of Italy. Allied forces landed in the Naples area. Germany has lost its last major ally in Europe.
