This issue of Za Stalina (For Stalin), No. 6 from June 29, 1941 — printed just a week after the outbreak of the German invasion — is one of the earliest wartime Red Navy newspapers. Published for naval and anti-aircraft units, the issue rallies sailors and gunners to resist Nazi air raids with unwavering precision. It reports heroic shootdowns, frontline updates from the Soviet Information Bureau, and letters from home. A rare surviving testament to the Soviet Union’s first days of the Great Patriotic War. Likely, only a handful of copies still exist.

Radio Gunner Glushkov Shoots Down Enemy Plane
Our reconnaissance aircraft was returning from a mission. Below: enemy tanks and trucks.
Suddenly from the water side — a Messerschmitt! An enemy fighter tried to intercept.
But Glushkov, our radio operator, met him with a long burst from his machine gun.
The first burst struck! The Messerschmitt burst into flames and crashed into the sea.
Later, another German plane approached — another burst, another crash.
Two enemy planes down in one flight.
We Will Not Disgrace Our Weapons
I swear — if I meet the enemy first, I will be the one to shoot him down!
It’s not pride — it’s confidence in the strength of the Red Army and Navy.
We’ve trained hard, we know our machines, and we won’t miss.
Red Navy Man G. Rakov
Communists Lead the Way
In air battles, communists like pilot Efremov led the charge.
In fierce clashes, our men shot down three enemy transports.
Heroes include Sidenko, Rodionov, Mitin, Sereda, and others.
Wherever there’s danger — the communists go first.
From the Soviet Information Bureau (Evening Report)
On June 28, our troops repelled multiple enemy attacks and fought fierce defensive battles.
On the Shauliai front, the enemy suffered major losses.
On the Minsk front, the Red Army continues to resist.
In the Lutsk region, fighting continues with delaying tactics.
Near Lviv, heavy defensive battles are underway.
The Fascists Will Pay!
We anti-air gunners are sure of one thing: the enemy won’t leave our airfield alive.
We meet fascist planes with sharp, trained eyes and deadly fire.
Every day, every man watches the skies — ready for the shot.
We won’t let even one get past.
Junior Sergeant M. Vasiliev
The Youth Will Not Fail
The war has begun, and new gunners — young Komsomol members — have joined our batteries.
They have shown that age is no barrier to aim and accuracy.
Now we strike quickly, without delay, hitting every target.
Junior Sergeant N. Firsov
Letter from Home: “We Wait for You With Victory!”
Sasha, June 29 — I am leaving for the front.
Papa and Vita are volunteering too.
I will go after you if needed.
We’re proud of you, son.
Let the enemy fear your strength.
We wait for you — with victory.
Your mother
Strike Without Missing!
Only alert, determined gunners can bring down the enemy.
We’ve trained hard — now it's time to show our firepower.
Don’t let the fascist pass.
Strike him down — no mercy, no mistake.
S. Tsyganov
Remember the Fighters — and Know Them
Know your defenders, respect their duty.
They carry their rifles with honor.
They will never surrender.
Junior Sergeant Petr Tokar
