DEATH TO THE GERMAN OCCUPIERS!

ORDER OF THE SUPREME COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF

To General of the Army SOKOLOVSKY

The troops of the Western Front, over the course of two days, broke through the enemy's heavily fortified defensive line and, advancing in the Smolensk direction, on August 30 seized the strategically important major road junction and key defensive stronghold of the Smolensk front — the city of YELNYA.

In the battles near YELNYA, the following distinguished themselves:

  • Guards tank troops under Major General BURDELNYY,
  • Forces of Lieutenant General GORDOV,
  • Major General KRYLOV,
  • Lieutenant General TRUBNIKOV,
  • Pilots of Marshal of Aviation GOLOVANOV,
  • Lieutenant General of Aviation GROMOV.

To commemorate the victory achieved by our troops at YELNYA, the following units are awarded the honorary title "YELNINSKY":

  • The 29th Guards Red Banner Rifle Division,
  • The 76th Guards Division,
  • The 25th Guards Tank Brigade,
  • The 26th Guards Tank Brigade,
  • The 23rd Guards Motorized Rifle Brigade,
  • The 71st Separate Tank Regiment,
  • The 100th Yelninskaya Separate Tank Company,
  • The 119th Separate Engineer Battalion.

At 19:00, our valiant troops, who have secured victory at YELNYA, will be honored with twelve artillery salvos from twenty-four guns.

For excellent combat performance and maneuvering skill, I express my gratitude to all the forces under your command participating in the battles on the Smolensk front. Special recognition is given to the distinguished actions of:

  • The 19th Guards Red Banner Yelninskaya Rifle Division under Major General STUCHENKO,
  • The 25th Guards Rifle Division under Colonel BABAYAN,
  • The 25th Guards Yelninskaya Tank Brigade under Colonel SHCHECHENKO,
  • The 26th Guards Yelninskaya Tank Brigade under Colonel KAPLIN,
  • The 71st Yelninskaya Separate Tank Regiment under Lieutenant Colonel POSYUK,
  • The 100th Red Banner Yelninskaya Artillery Brigade.

Death to the German invaders!
